Many beloved ’90s films seem unnecessary to reboot or continue, and Hocus Pocus, a true gem of cinema, often fits this mold. How could anyone replicate the charm of the original? However, the news that Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy would be reprising their roles as the Sanderson Sisters had us even more thrilled than when Sarah (played by Parker) spots an attractive guy. Initially, information about Hocus Pocus 2 trickled in slowly. Would this sequel really happen? When would it be released? And when, oh when, would a trailer grace our screens? Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait centuries like the Sanderson Sisters. Keep reading for all the spellbinding details you crave—including the release date—and to catch the newly released full-length trailer hinting at the Sanderson Sisters’ backstory (it looks fantastic!).
When is Hocus Pocus 2 Coming Out?
The Sanderson Sisters are set to enchant us once more this fall. After two years of anticipation, mark your calendars, as Hocus Pocus 2 will premiere on Disney+ on Friday, September 30, 2022. It’s important to note that there was some early confusion, as producer Adam Shankman initially suggested a Halloween release. “SISTAAAAAHHHHSSS! Aaaaand that’s a WRAP!!! #hocuspocus2 Congratulations to the amazing team @bettemidler @sarahjessicaparker @kathynajimy @567and8 @mrsleshem and the WHOLE cast and crew!!! Coming to you #halloween #2022 on @disneyplus,” he shared in a post. Honestly, this earlier date is a win; you can binge-watch the original Hocus Pocus and its sequel back-to-back countless times come Halloween!
Is There a Hocus Pocus 2 Trailer?
On June 28, Disney+ unveiled a teaser trailer for the sequel, and it certainly lived up to expectations. Check it out below! Then, on September 9, fans were treated to the first official full-length trailer, showcasing all its glory.
What’s the Sequel About?
While details about the sequel’s plot have been kept under wraps to maintain suspense, the trailers imply that the Sanderson Sisters are back to their mischievous ways in modern-day Salem. This installment takes place 29 years after the original film, where a virgin named Max (originally played by Omri Katz) lit the Black Flame Candle, reviving the witchy trio. As in the first movie, a group of teenagers stands between the sisters and the children of Salem. This time, a fresh set of modern teens takes center stage, and they seem to have some great one-liners ready to go!
Who’s in the Cast? Are the Original Stars Returning?
The sequel boasts a fantastic new cast, including Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso, and Tony Hale and Sam Richardson, both familiar faces from Veep. The trio of teens tasked with saving Salem includes Becca (Whitney Peak), Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo). Of course, everyone’s favorite witches—Midler, Parker, and Najimy—return as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson, respectively. Doug Jones, known as Billy Butcherson, is also back. Unfortunately, other original cast members like Omri Katz (Max), Thora Birch (Dani), Vinessa Shaw (Allison), Amanda Shepherd (Emily), and Larry Bagby (“Ice”) are not expected to reprise their roles. However, perhaps there will be surprise cameos!
“I am beyond thrilled to be involved in the sequel to a film that is as beloved as Hocus Pocus,” director Anne Fletcher expressed upon the announcement. “Fans around the world have embraced these characters, making this film a Halloween tradition, and I’m lucky to work with these extraordinarily talented ladies in their iconic roles, along with our fabulous new cast members.”
We couldn’t agree more, Fletcher! September 30 can’t arrive soon enough.
