Why Are Baby High Chairs So Incredibly Bulky?

Kids are small, so why does their furniture feel so overwhelming? I find myself asking this question multiple times a day. Whether it’s bumping my toe against a stool, trying to vacuum around a tiny table, or figuring out where to stash all this stuff, it’s as if kid furniture manages to be compact yet feels massive at the same time.

I thought that once we moved past the baby stage, life would be simpler without swings, cradles, and play gyms. But I was mistaken. Even after parting ways with those items, my furniture foe remained: the high chair.

Every day, I trip over its legs, get my pocket caught as I walk by, or have to shove it aside to navigate through the kitchen with laundry baskets. This high chair has been around for two years, and I still can’t seem to adjust to its presence.

I chose a model that somewhat folds up, thinking it would be perfect for our open-concept, somewhat cramped home. The plan was simple: feed the baby, fold it up, and tuck it against the wall. Easy, right?

However, I was pregnant and perhaps too enchanted by the stylish rose gold design to consider our actual layout. Our “dining area” is merely a corner of a larger living space, and the kitchen offers no wall space for storage unless I part with my beloved buffet. Sacrificing that storage isn’t an option, nor am I willing to discard something I cherish just to make room for a piece of toddler furniture that I hope will only be here for another year.

My daughter is two and while some toddlers can manage sitting at the table, mine is a whirlwind of energy, ranking in the 3rd percentile for size but over 97th for chaos. Trust me, the high chair is still very much essential.

So, in my home, the high chair remains the unwelcome piece of furniture that I can’t escape. Even though it drives me crazy, I have no choice but to deal with it. I can’t be alone in this—what’s the troublesome furniture in your home?
