Honestly, we believe this little girl deserves an Emmy, Tony, and Oscar too!
Who shines brighter as an actor: Viola Davis, with her impressive array of awards, or six-year-old Lily Brown, who has captured our hearts portraying Davis on her Instagram channel?
Brown, an incredible young talent, is gaining national recognition for her engaging and spot-on videos that tell the stories of remarkable Black figures, including performers, politicians, dancers, athletes, and inventors.
It all began with a supportive mom and Lily’s early love for acting and history. When Sarah Brown’s daughter returned from preschool one day with a fascinating printout about Rosa Parks, Sarah eagerly read it to her inquisitive three-year-old. Curious about Lily’s understanding, she quizzed her on Parks, and to her delight, Lily could answer the questions and recite much of the material.
“I thought, ‘Lily, wait! Hold that thought!’” Sarah recalls. She dashed to find the closest outfit resembling Rosa Parks’ attire for her daughter. “I grabbed my phone and said, ‘Do it again!’”
Thus began a joyful journey that they both cherish, along with their growing social media presence.
“I’m creative, and she loves to learn; it’s a perfect match,” Sarah states.
The dynamic mother-daughter pair has gathered thousands of followers on their Instagram account, go_lily_grow, where they share inspiring videos about iconic Black individuals. They’ve been featured on local news in Detroit and even Good Morning America, spreading their uplifting messages of Black joy and achievement.
Lily has portrayed figures like Stacey Abrams, Angela Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Kamala Harris, and Tina Turner, complete with costumes crafted by her mom, along with songs and dance moves. Their videos are shared throughout the year, not just during Black History Month, currently focusing on Black inventors like George Crum, the creator of potato chips, Garrett Morgan, the inventor of the traffic light, and Marie Van Britton Brown, who developed the first home security system.
When choosing which stories to highlight, Sarah says they select individuals who resonate with Lily, such as Viola Davis, whom Lily saw on screen and exclaimed, “Wow, she’s beautiful; let’s do her!” Other selections are inspired by current events, like track star Sha’Carri Richardson’s Olympic disqualification.
Many of the figures Lily has portrayed have taken notice. Whoopi Goldberg even sent her a collection of books, including some authored by herself and other inspiring stories. Laila Ali and Erykah Badu now follow Lily on Instagram.
Sarah has intentionally maintained a positive tone in their educational posts. “When I was Lily’s age, I learned about the darker aspects of Black history,” she remembers. “I didn’t want to expose my daughter to that negativity. Right now, it’s all about positivity.”
Though their videos are gaining media attention now, Sarah and Lily have been dedicated to their project for years, amassing 265 posts on Instagram to date. “We’ve been planting these seeds for a while,” Sarah explains. “Now, we’re starting to see the fruits of our labor.”
What’s next for Lily? They’re eagerly anticipating Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, hoping to create a video in time for Women’s History Month this March.
