My Child Has Officially Outperformed Me (And Probably Outwits Me Too)

Every parent eventually faces the moment when their children eclipse them. For me, that realization hit hard when my 11-year-old son recently demonstrated greater strength than I could muster—and it’s not just strength.

I was wrestling with a jar of gourmet nut butter (the kind sealed tightly in a glass jar with a metal lid) and was utterly defeated. My recent neck injury, likely from either lugging groceries or attempting a “quick” core exercise video, didn’t help matters. My son was casually enjoying breakfast while I struggled, grunting in frustration.

It turns out that diminishing grip strength is a common issue for adults as they age. So yes, I’m losing my hold on reality—or perhaps just jars and cans.

“I can do it, Mom,” he offered. With a few taps of a butter knife on the lid—a trick he’d learned from his dad—he twisted the jar open with ease. I heard that satisfying pop. He handed the open jar to me with a grin, overflowing with pride.

In that moment, I understood how my mom felt when my sister and I were kids, easily navigating the complexities of new technology, like VCRs.

But now? My son is officially stronger than me. He’s also quicker (he could outrun me when he was a toddler—though I tend to be on the slower side). He once even outpaced a guy from our town who plays in the NFL during a local track event.

When it comes to technology, he’s light-years ahead of me. He’s diving into coding in his tech class, and he expertly manages the television in our house, which requires juggling three different remote controls.

He might even be funnier than I am. After I made a few egg puns about my new egg cooker, he quipped, “Mom, you need to egg-spand your repertoire of egg jokes.” Ouch!

He’s certainly better at math, and honestly, he might just be smarter than me overall. Recently, while discussing current events, I was blown away by his understanding of both recent news and historical events. “I read about the fall of the Berlin Wall in a book,” he informed me. He’s even considering joining a stock club at school to simulate investing in the stock market—whatever he chooses, I might just invest in for real.

There comes a time in every parent’s journey when they witness their children surpassing them, both in significant and trivial ways. It’s a natural progression. As parents, we aspire for our children to find happiness and success—however they define those concepts—and exceed our own achievements. Each generation aims for the next to solve monumental challenges, from global warming to finding a way for everyone to earn a decent wage while working just four days a week.

I want my son to excel in every way possible.

As for my jar-opening skills? While shopping recently, my son spotted something called the “Mighty Gripper,” a rubber pad designed to make opening jars easier. “Get a grip!” the packaging cheerfully proclaimed.

“That looks like something you could use, Mom,” he said. I had to agree; I definitely needed to get a grip.

The four-pack of Mighty Grippers was only a few bucks, so I bought it. Now, with a little help from the Mighty Gripper, I’m opening jars left and right. But I know that if I encounter a jar that even the Mighty Gripper can’t conquer, I can always call on my son for assistance.

As time passes, I guess I better get used to looking to him for guidance rather than the other way around. Time flies, and before long, I might be asking him to activate the teleportation device for me in a retirement home because I won’t be able to figure out that newfangled technology.

But I doubt he’ll know how to set a VCR to record a show—though to be fair, I never quite mastered that either. But there’s always hope, right?
