I’ve been navigating the challenges of motherhood for quite some time, and now that greater freedom is on the horizon, I find myself feeling unexpectedly melancholic.
A friend recently shared a snapshot from her family vacation featuring her elementary school-aged kids swimming solo in the hotel pool. I noticed her husband lounging nearby, and she texted, “Look! Our first chance to relax on vacation in years! You’ll be here soon!” Initially, I felt a rush of excitement. The idea of lounging poolside with a podcast sounded like a dream come true after eight years of constant caregiving. The thought of a future where I could have a little more freedom seemed magical.
However, as I studied the photo, my heart sank. There were no tiny toes or little hands reaching for me, just the reminder that my little ones are growing up. After so long in the trenches with young children, feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, I should be thrilled about the approaching change, but instead, I feel a profound sadness.
I will miss the cuddly swaddled babies and our bath time adventures. The adorable clumsy waddles, the spontaneous hugs, and the sweet slobbery kisses will all be memories. Reflecting on how much I will miss these moments nearly takes my breath away. It’s crucial for me to focus on the exciting future rather than dwell on what I’m losing. To help shift my mindset, I’ve compiled a list of things to anticipate in this next chapter of parenting.
Using The Bathroom Alone
For years, I’ve managed to wipe and change while trying to keep a toddler from eating random objects. The thought of using the toilet with both hands free feels like a mini-vacation. Being able to sit quietly without a child asking questions about my grooming habits is a luxury I can’t wait for.
Packing Light
Traveling with kids often requires packing like I’m moving house. The endless “what if” scenarios lead to excess baggage, from toys to safety equipment. I dream of a day when I can simply toss some snacks and drinks into a bag and head out with ease.
Sleeping Through The Night
While I cherish those sleepy midnight snuggles, uninterrupted sleep feels like a distant memory. Imagining a night where I can stretch out in bed without worrying about waking a child or stealthily navigating my way to the bathroom is blissful.
Big Adventures
Taking trips to amusement parks or concerts has been a logistical nightmare with young ones. I often feel guilty for the experiences my older kids have missed because of their younger siblings. Soon, our family outings will be filled with laughter and participation, and I can’t wait for those moments.
More Time As A Couple
In the early days of parenthood, my husband and I easily found time for each other. Now, finding sitters is a challenge with four energetic kids. The day our eldest can help watch the younger ones while we enjoy a meal together will be a welcome change that strengthens our bond.
There are indeed wonderful experiences ahead, despite the nostalgia for what I will miss. Although the future may look different, it promises to be just as fulfilling. I am determined to cultivate excitement for what lies ahead rather than mourn the past. Who knows, the joy I discover in this new phase might surprise me.
