Pfizer and BioNTech have announced their intention to seek Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the FDA for a booster dose of their COVID-19 vaccine aimed at children aged 5 to 11. This decision comes after encouraging findings from a study involving 140 children who received a third dose of the 10-microgram vaccine at least six months after their second dose.

In a subset of 30 participants, researchers observed that Omicron-fighting antibody levels were 36 times higher one month post-booster compared to levels prior to the third dose. Additionally, antibodies targeting the original strain of the virus were found to be six times greater one month after the booster than after the second dose. The study did not indicate any new safety concerns among the children involved in the trial. According to Pfizer’s announcement, these results “underscore the importance of a third dose in sustaining robust protection against the virus in this age group.”

During the Omicron surge, the New York State Department of Health noted that the standard two doses of the Pfizer vaccine were less effective against this highly transmissible variant. However, a follow-up study from the CDC revealed that, although vaccine effectiveness had diminished over time and during the surge, vaccination significantly reduced the risk of hospitalization and death. Currently, there are no authorized vaccines for children under 5, but ongoing trials show promise. Companies like Moderna have also sought FDA EUA for younger populations based on positive trial results. The CDC authorized vaccines for children aged 5 to 11 in early November 2021. Out of 28 million American kids in this age group, approximately 10 million have received at least one vaccine dose.
