Broccoli Cooking

Getting kids to eat vegetables can be a challenge, and broccoli often gets a bad reputation. My children, however, are somewhat okay with it—as long as it’s cooked quickly. I usually bake it in our toaster oven, but that means chopping it and drizzling olive oil, and I often end up burning the tops. (I’m no culinary expert.) Over the years, I’ve gathered various tips to enhance its flavor, like Kristen Bell’s crunchy pretzel-topped broccoli (because who doesn’t love Parmesan?). Some parents swear by serving raw broccoli with dips like hummus, which I appreciate, but I believe older kids tend to enjoy more elaborate veggie platters.

So, when I stumbled upon a new TikTok hack for cooking broccoli, I was completely captivated. It’s pure genius!

User @lindseyh123 got creative and shared her method of cooking an entire head of broccoli upside down in boiling water. Picture broccoli as a tree: she places the top with the florets submerged in water while leaving the trunk above, acting like a handle. After boiling, she easily lifts it out by the cool trunk and slices off the tender crowns like cutting through butter.

This technique is fantastic for preparing broccoli for baby-led weaning; I wish I had a little one around to try it on. It also softens the vegetable perfectly for mixing into mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, or simply stirring into rice to “hide” it among other tastes. Plus, it’s great for kids to snack on by itself, though I’d still sprinkle on a bit of salt.
