Recently, during a visit to my doctor, I received the classic advice to lose weight. Isn’t it amusing how you can predict what they will say, yet they still feel compelled to mention it? Since my second child arrived three years ago, I haven’t shed any baby weight. I managed to lose some in between pregnancies, but with PCOS and the challenges of getting older, it’s a different story with two kids. Losing weight for me means being more disciplined than most.

My doctor suggested incorporating more cardio and trying intermittent fasting. To be honest, I do want to slim down, but managing kids is stressful, and I often find myself gravitating toward sugary snacks. Let’s face it: Cardio? How am I supposed to fit that into my day while keeping two little ones alive? So, I decided to give intermittent fasting a shot. However, my doctor didn’t provide much guidance, only advising me to fast for 16 hours and eat during an 8-hour window. I figured it out and stopped eating by around 4 p.m.

Unfortunately, this experiment lasted only about a week. I struggle with blood sugar regulation and need to eat every few hours to maintain balance. I’m not sure why I thought fasting would be a good fit for me. The feeling of being “hangry” was all too real. Every night during that week, I found myself getting increasingly frustrated with my nursing toddler. He’s always nursed to sleep, but suddenly, I was annoyed by it. Laying there, I felt the hunger grow, fueling my irritation.

While intermittent fasting may work for some, it definitely didn’t suit me, especially while nursing. I can’t help but feel my doctor set me up for failure by not offering adequate resources. The outcome was not just failure, but also an unhappy experience for both me and my son. I hated the constant hunger, the bouts of irritability, and feeling frustrated with my child for doing something natural. I eventually abandoned fasting. After all, a few extra pounds aren’t the end of the world.
