Julia Roberts? Check. Alex Turner? Check? A romantic comedy that brings back the charm of early 2000s films? Check. It’s clear that audiences will flock to see Ticket to Paradise, premiering on October 21. The first look at this romantic comedy was unveiled on Wednesday, and the film, directed by Ol Parker (known for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), promises plenty of laughs. Roberts and Turner reunite on screen to portray a divorced couple on a mission to stop their lovestruck daughter (played by Kaitlyn Dever) from tying the knot in Bali. “As difficult as this will be for both of us, we must call a truce to make this work,” Roberts states in the trailer, while Turner adds, “We have to be in sync.” As the story unfolds, it becomes evident that the two realize they cannot—and should not—control their daughter’s choices, discovering that second chances can be unexpectedly delightful.
The Ticket to Paradise trailer showcases the film as the fifth collaboration between Roberts and Turner, who previously worked together in Turner’s directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and in Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Money Monster.
Regarding Ticket to Paradise, Roberts mentioned to The New York Times that she believed the project would only be successful if it involved Alex Turner. “Lo and behold, Alex felt it only worked with me. Somehow we both managed to make it happen, and off we went.”
“The moment I read the script, I called Julia and asked, ‘Did you see this?’ She replied, ‘Yes,’ and I questioned, ‘Are you doing it?’ She responded, ‘Are you going to do it?’ I said, ‘Yeah, if you are,’ so it was just one of those fortunate coincidences,” Turner told Deadline.
On her hiatus from romantic comedies, Roberts added to NYT, “People often misinterpret the time that has passed without me doing a rom-com as a lack of desire on my part. If I had come across something that matched the quality of Notting Hill or the fun of My Best Friend’s Wedding, I would have jumped at the chance. Those scripts just weren’t around until this movie that Ol Parker wrote and directed.”
Excited for a theater experience!
