In a heartfelt tribute, Google is celebrating the memory of 10-year-old Alithia Haven Ramirez, one of the 19 children tragically lost in the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Alithia had submitted her artwork for the Doodle for Google contest, aimed at inspiring young artists to share their creativity, before her untimely passing. In honor of all 21 victims of the shooting, Google prominently features Alithia’s artwork on the contest’s page. “I want the world to see my art and show the world what I can do. I want people to be happy when they see my passion in art,” she expressed in her submission, which showcases a girl sitting on a couch with a dog, surrounded by colorful objects spelling out “Google.”

Alithia’s aunt, Linda Martinez, shared with PEOPLE how much her niece cherished drawing. She fondly displayed a sunflower illustration Alithia had gifted her, stating, “It’s the last thing she gave me.” According to Alithia’s obituary, she aspired to attend art school in Paris and loved playing soccer, while also being a role model for her siblings.

Just a day following the incident, Alithia’s parents shared her artwork with Uvalde native and actor Matthew McConaughey. During a White House press briefing on June 7, McConaughey emotionally held up a photograph of Alithia alongside her artwork, advocating for necessary changes in gun legislation. President Biden also received some of her pieces, which are now displayed in the White House. During his visit to Uvalde, Alithia’s parents informed him of her artistic talent, leading him to request a piece to hang in the presidential residence. “He did say, ‘Whenever we hang it up, we are going to send you a picture of where it is hanging, and you are free to see it anytime.’ Something special that she put her heart into,” her father, Tom Ramirez, shared with CBS affiliate KENS5.

While this tribute is touching, it underscores the urgent need for effective gun control measures.
