For over 60 years, the beloved lemon-lime soda has been packaged in green plastic, but starting August 1, the beverage will be available in clear bottles instead. According to Tony Ramirez, CEO of R3CYCLE, a partner of Coca-Cola in this initiative, “Eliminating color from bottles improves the quality of recycled materials.” He emphasized that this change will boost the availability of food-grade recycled PET, allowing clear PET Sprite bottles to be reused in producing new bottles, thereby supporting a circular plastic economy.
Other Coca-Cola brands, such as Mello Yellow, Fresca, and Seagram’s, that also used green bottles will transition to clear packaging. While both single-use PET and recycled PET bottles are recyclable, they can take centuries to decompose. This has led many companies, including Coca-Cola, to explore alternative plant-based materials in addition to recycled plastics. In October 2021, Coca-Cola debuted a prototype made entirely from plant-based plastic.
Additionally, Coca-Cola announced that its bottled water brand, Dasani, will now be packaged in bottles made completely from recycled plastic (with the exception of caps and labels). This transition is expected to save over 20 million pounds of new plastic compared to 2019 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25,000 metric tons in 2023 alone. However, Coca-Cola produced approximately 5.49 million metric tons of greenhouse gases in 2021, a 5% increase from the previous year, and is responsible for an estimated three million tons of plastic packaging each year. While these steps are positive, there remains significant work to address climate change.
