Exciting news from the Cincinnati Zoo! Bibi, Fiona’s mother, has given birth to a new calf, marking a joyous occasion for the entire zoo family. Announced on Thursday, the birth occurred Wednesday evening, and the yet-to-be-named baby is already thriving, weighing significantly more than Fiona did at birth. “This little one is much larger than Fiona was at birth,” says Julia Kline, the zoo’s animal care director. “Fiona was born six weeks premature, weighing just 29 pounds and unable to stand. This new calf is already walking and weighs at least twice as much as Fiona did!”

Currently, Bibi and her newborn are being kept behind the scenes to allow for bonding time, away from the other hippos. “We can’t see if nursing has begun yet since the water is murky,” Kline continued. “This is Bibi’s first experience with nursing, as Fiona required special care from the zoo staff.” In the meantime, five-year-old Fiona is happily spending time with her father, Tucker, while Bibi focuses on her new arrival. The zoo promises to share updates and adorable photos on their social media as soon as they can do so without interruption.

Fiona captured the hearts of many when she was born prematurely in 2017, weighing only 29 pounds, a record low for her species. Her remarkable journey has been inspiring, and she now tips the scales at over 2,000 pounds! “Fiona finally hit 2,000 pounds!” the zoo announced recently. “She weighed in at 2,036 pounds this morning! We’re so proud of how far she has come! 🦛🎉🎉🎉 #TeamFiona.”
