“I’m incredibly thankful to the universe or whatever higher power there is that I became a father later in life. I really couldn’t have managed it back then,” shared John Stamos in an interview with TODAY Parents. The beloved star, known for his role as Uncle Jesse in Full House and Fuller House, is now focused on his most cherished role: being a dad to his 4-year-old son, Billy, whom he shares with his wife, Caitlin McHugh.
Stamos welcomed Billy in April 2018 when he was 54 years old. Reflecting on his journey to fatherhood, he admitted, “I’ve always wanted kids. I thought, ‘I can’t wait to be a dad; I’ve played a dad on TV,’ but it’s a whole different experience.” He humorously added, “It’s the biggest blessing in my life. I can’t picture my life without him, even though it’s a challenge to do it right.”
During his peak fame with Fuller House, Stamos realized he wouldn’t have been ready to be a parent earlier in life. “I definitely wouldn’t have been mature enough to raise a child back then,” he acknowledged. “Being a good parent requires tremendous love, patience, common sense, and the ability to teach values. Plus, everything is quite expensive,” he noted.
Stamos also mentioned that he and McHugh are considering expanding their family. “We want to have more children,” he confirmed.
In the meantime, he’s been busy with new projects to impress his son. “I’ve been trying to seem cool to Billy since he was two months old,” he said, noting that his son didn’t seem to be impressed by his touring with the Beach Boys. However, Stamos finally earned his son’s admiration by voicing Iron Man in the upcoming season of Disney Junior’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends. “Now he tells everyone, ‘My dad’s going to be on Spidey!’ Finally!” Stamos exclaimed. The new season premieres on August 19, which is also Stamos’ birthday. Here’s hoping Uncle Jesse gets his birthday wish of being his son’s hero!
