This decision follows reports of two concerning incidents, including one involving a 10-month-old who tragically died from asphyxiation and another who suffered neck bruising due to the product’s strap.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has highlighted that models 1.0 through 4.0 of the MamaRoo Baby Swing, along with all RockaRoo Baby Rockers, have restraint straps that can hang below the seat when not in use. This poses a strangulation risk for crawling infants who might become entangled. Notably, the newly launched MamaRoo model 1046 from July 2022 is not part of this recall.
The affected MamaRoo models include 4M-005, 1026, and 1037, while the RockaRoo model number is 4M-012. These swings were available for purchase from January 2010 to August 2022 at various retailers including BuyBuy Baby and Target, as well as online platforms like Amazon, with prices ranging from $160 to $250.
Parents are strongly advised to stop using these swings and rockers immediately, ensuring that they are placed in a location where infants cannot crawl underneath and reach the dangling straps. To address the issue, 4moms is providing free strap fasteners for these recalled products to prevent the straps from hanging while not in use. Even if an infant has outgrown the crawling stage, 4moms recommends parents obtain a free strap fastener as a precautionary measure.
This recall coincides with recent CPSC warnings regarding the dangers of using infant rockers for sleep, which have been linked to at least 14 fatalities associated with products from other brands, including Fisher-Price and Kids2. In response, President Biden recently enacted the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, banning inclined rockers and padded crib bumpers, which have been associated with over 200 infant deaths.
