School Year Resolutions
By Jessica Lane
In my home, mornings have often been a whirlwind of frantic shouts as I try to manage the chaos of getting four young sons ready for the day. “Wake up! Come downstairs! Eat breakfast! Hurry up! Why are you not dressed? Stop wrestling your brother while he’s trying to eat!” With my husband leaving for work before the kids are up and my job being the more flexible work-from-home role, mornings can feel overwhelming. However, this back-to-school season, I’m committed to implementing routines that are effective for us, aiming for a more serene start to the day. Here’s a look at my past challenges and my new approach.
A Functional Cubby System
How many times have I set up drop zones, entryway furniture, and cubby systems that never quite worked? Too many to count! This year, I took the time to assess how we actually use our space and what we need both before school and after drop-off. One major issue with previous setups was that they were too high, with our built-in drop zone located near the garage door clearly designed for adults. This year, I’ve created a child-sized locker/cubby system right by the front door. Each child has their own cubby, labeled with their name and photo (even the dog has his own spot!) to store backpacks, completed artwork, jackets, lunch boxes, and water bottles. Additionally, I’ve installed three hanging wire bins in the kitchen for the kids to place any papers they think I need to see or homework assignments that are due that night. In theory, this should help keep important papers from getting lost and eliminate the mess of backpacks cluttering our living room and porch — we’ll see how it goes!
Building Buffer Time with an Adjusted Bus Schedule
Our bus arrives at 8:44 AM, but this year, my kids believe it comes at 8:34 AM. I’m intentionally adding buffer time to our morning routine to account for those inevitable moments when someone forgets to brush their teeth or realizes it’s show-and-tell day! I’m okay with them thinking the bus is running a bit late so they can be a little more ahead of schedule.
Simplifying Breakfast
Since my husband leaves early, he helps out by preparing breakfast (and sometimes scrambling me eggs, which is a definite plus!). However, this can lead to some morning chaos, like kids trying to switch cereals or fighting over drinks. This year, I’m empowering my kids to make their own breakfasts — but just one breakfast each! Repeating meals has historically caused unnecessary stress and wasted time. Inspired by a momfluencer’s breakfast station, I plan to minimize my involvement in breakfast preparation while ensuring they have a balanced meal. The same concept will apply to packing their lunch boxes. This approach is about working smarter, not harder. It’s a gradual process, and I’m taking it one step at a time, hoping a few small changes will lead to smoother mornings and perhaps even a smile as they board the bus — or at least not having to sprint after it!

In summary, I’m focused on creating practical systems that cater to our family’s unique needs this school season. From a functional cubby system to buffer time and simplifying breakfast, these changes aim to foster a more harmonious morning routine for everyone.
