Meghan and Harry Welcome a New Rescue Dog with a Heartwarming Backstory

In a delightful addition to their family, Meghan and Harry have adopted a seven-year-old beagle named ‘Mamma Mia.’ The royal couple chose to adopt this special dog after the closure of the Envigo Facility in Cumberland County, Virginia, which was shut down due to unsanitary conditions, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Previously, the facility was responsible for breeding beagles for pharmaceutical testing and faced over 70 welfare violations in just one year, leading to the tragic deaths of over 300 animals. Following an investigation by PETA, the facility was deemed “a prison-like factory,” resulting in the displacement of around 4,000 beagles needing new homes. Thankfully, Envigo covered the adoption costs, providing $100 for each rescued dog and $150 for nursing mothers.

Animal rights attorney Shannon Keith, who heads the nonprofit Beagle Freedom Project, collaborated with Meghan and Harry on their adoption journey. “The duchess called me personally — I was stunned to hear from her,” Keith shared. During their meeting, the couple chose to adopt Mamma Mia instead of her puppies, recognizing that older dogs often struggle to find homes.

Imagine Mamma Mia’s transformation from a neglectful breeding facility to a life of luxury with the Sussexes. Before leaving, Prince Harry asked if Mamma Mia had a favorite toy, ensuring she had everything she needed for her new life. Mamma Mia joins the family alongside their other two rescue dogs, Pula and Guy, and their children, Archie and Lilibet.

Meghan and Harry continue to make a significant impact in the world of animal rescue.
