UPPAbaby is recalling more than 14,000 all-terrain RIDGE jogging strollers following an incident where a child’s fingertip was amputated after it became lodged in the brake mechanism. According to a statement issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the rear disc brakes of these strollers possess openings that may cause serious injuries if a child’s finger gets caught while the stroller is in operation. Only one such incident has been reported.
The affected strollers bear serial numbers starting with “1401RDGUS,” which are located on the right side of the frame. These strollers feature a black frame and are available in three fabric colors: white (“BRYCE”), charcoal (“JAKE”), and slate blue (“REGGIE”). The RIDGE strollers were sold at various retailers, including Amazon, BuyBuyBaby, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Pottery Barn Kids, from October 2021 until August 2022, with a retail price of approximately $600.
In their official statement, UPPAbaby emphasized their commitment to child safety: “Our top priority at UPPAbaby is the safety of children. We conduct extensive testing to ensure UPPAbaby products meet all global industry and regulatory standards. Despite passing all tests and meeting all standards, UPPAbaby received one report about the all-terrain RIDGE stroller.”
UPPAbaby believes that the injury reported likely resulted from misuse, as the child was not inside the stroller when the amputation occurred. The CPSC advises consumers to cease use of the stroller until replacement brake disks can be installed. Customers can reach out to UPPAbaby for complimentary replacements.
