On the first day back, some students hesitated to leave their cars, but a welcoming Golden Retriever helped ease their worries. “There was a lot of hesitancy and anxiety about getting out of the car and going into the school. So we placed the dogs outside, and I do believe that that did help some of the kids see that dog and go, ‘OK, well, I’m going to go pet the dog,’” said Clara Matthews, a crisis response coordinator with the K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry.
The dogs are flexible in their approach, adapting to how students seek comfort—whether it’s greeting them at their cars or sitting beside them in class. “Our goal is to be present with those that are hurting, and we show up and just be with them,” Matthews explained.
Research supports the idea that the presence of dogs can significantly lower anxiety levels and boost mood, demonstrating the effectiveness of animal-assisted therapy for both children and adults facing emotional challenges.
