When it comes to purchasing or leasing a new vehicle, especially for families with multiple car seats, the task can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re considering a compact sedan, a spacious SUV, or a minivan, knowing which vehicles simplify the installation of infant, toddler, and child safety seats can be a huge relief.

Fortunately, Cars.com recently released its annual Car Seat Fit Report Card, evaluating how well various vehicles accommodate car seats from July 2021 to July 2022. Certified child passenger safety technicians assessed over 50 vehicles, grading them on factors like lower anchors, top tether anchors, and LATCH systems. Some of the top performers included the 2022 Acura RDX, 2021 and 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback, 2022 Cadillac XT5, 2021 and 2022 Ford Escape PHEV, 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, 2022 Kia EV6, and the 2021 and 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, along with the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan.

“With nearly 60% of parents considering car seat fit when choosing their vehicle, it’s great to see this year’s Car Seat Fit Report Card expand to include a variety of price points and hybrid and electric models,” said Sarah Johnson, Cars.com news editor and certified child-passenger safety technician. “Car manufacturers are paying attention and providing more options for families.”

Assessment Methodology

For the assessments, technicians installed a Chicco KeyFit 30 infant car seat, a Graco Contender 65 convertible car seat, and a Graco TurboBooster seat in each vehicle. The front seats were adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a shorter passenger, while the three child safety seats were positioned in the second row, with the booster behind the driver and the infant and convertible seats behind the front passenger. In larger SUVs and minivans, the forward-facing convertible and booster seats were tested in the third row, and the technicians evaluated accessibility.

Key Findings

According to the survey, 33% of parents test car seats at dealerships before making a purchase. Among more than 58% of parents who base their vehicle decision on car seat fit, 85% reported needing to upgrade to a larger vehicle due to having multiple children in car seats. Interestingly, nearly 73% of parents indicated that safety features like backup cameras, rear-seat alert systems, and LATCH systems were crucial considerations when choosing a vehicle.

Every parent, whether new or experienced, understands the stress and frustration that can come with selecting the right family vehicle and ensuring car seats are installed correctly—48% of parents admitted to making installation mistakes. This Car Seat Fit Check is an invaluable resource for caregivers seeking guidance.
