My Most Memorable Parenting Experience
As I sat nearby, I heard a small voice utter a word that caught my attention. “Oh no,” my four-year-old daughter, Lily, muttered in frustration as her tower of colorful blocks crashed down.
Curious and a bit alarmed, I asked, “Where did you learn that word?”
Her response was unexpected. “From you,” she replied innocently.
It was a moment of realization. I explained to her that such language is inappropriate and that I needed to be more mindful of my own words. “Okay, Mommy,” she agreed, but then she asked, “Can I just say the word ‘heck’ instead?”
That question left me momentarily flustered. Parenting is full of surprises, and sometimes the lessons we teach can come back to us in the most surprising ways.
