A Case for National Abstinence Month: The Perils of December Birthdays
When it comes to family planning, the journey can often be unpredictable. Personally, only one of my children was thoughtfully planned. Blessed with remarkable fertility, I sometimes wonder how I managed to avoid an unplanned pregnancy during my early college years. It seems that just the thought of a baby — and poof! — nine months later, I’m holding one.
As a result of this fertility, my partner and I didn’t prioritize details like effective birth control, timing, or spacing of our children. In the heat of passion, those considerations rarely cross your mind. However, if I had taken a moment to think critically about conception timing, I would have certainly avoided March as a conception month. Therefore, I propose we establish March as National Abstinence Month, and I encourage everyone to join me. Why? Simple math: conceiving in March leads to a December baby, and frankly, December birthdays present unique challenges.
If you happen to be born in December, please don’t take this personally, but the truth is — December babies often face a tough situation. Parents do their best to separate birthday and holiday celebrations, but the reality is that they tend to merge into one. Children can only handle so many gifts before they become overwhelmed, and it can be financially taxing to provide separate celebrations for both occasions. The holiday season itself is already a time of plenty, making a December birthday feel overshadowed.
Additionally, other parents face their own difficulties. Navigating chilly weather to attend birthday parties can be exhausting; everyone is fatigued and less inclined to celebrate. Indoor venues for parties can be limited and the thought of a dozen kids crowded in a small space is hardly enticing. All of this contributes to an environment where December birthdays can feel less than special.
As we enter March, let’s remember these challenges and take proactive steps to ensure that future generations enjoy their birthdays without the weight of the holiday season overshadowing them. This March, I suggest we all consider abstaining from conception for the benefit of our future children.
