Parenting in Constant Motion: A Day in the Life of a Mom
As a mother, my life resembles a relentless whirlwind of activity. From the moment I awaken each day until I finally close my eyes at night, I am in a state of perpetual motion. The to-do lists seem infinite, each item never quite crossed off.
The day begins with the familiar routine: waking the children, preparing their breakfast, and grabbing a much-needed coffee for myself. “Breathe,” I remind myself, but there’s little time to pause. “We can’t be late!” becomes the mantra as I frantically search for lost shoes and backpacks, while negotiating wardrobe choices—”You really don’t want to wear a jacket today?”
It’s a constant rush. I multitask relentlessly, doing two, three, or even four things at once to stay on track. My focus shifts rapidly—here, there, everywhere. More coffee is consumed as I turn on my computer and dive into work, all while keeping an eye on the clock.
The urgency continues as I pick up one child, then the next, checking backpacks, signing school agendas, and assisting with homework that often seems more complex than I recall from my own school days. Thankfully, my teenager can help her younger brother with math, even if I have to explain the confusion of Common Core Math.
Dinner time is another chaotic event, as I encourage my kids to eat, often while I simultaneously load the dishwasher, sweep the floor, and wipe down counters. “Can you please put your backpack away?” I ask, while hoping for a smoother morning tomorrow.
As the day progresses, the demands on my time only increase. Dance classes for my daughter and karate for my son mean more rushing to the car, and then it’s time to drop off one child and hurry to the next activity. I often run errands while they are occupied, trying to keep track of my ever-elusive list.
After picking up the kids again, it’s back home where I remind them of the necessity of showers and hair washing. “Hurry, your sister is waiting!” I might say, while also asking, “Do you need a snack?”
Finally, as the day begins to quiet down, I feel my energy wane, but there are still tasks to complete. I check the laundry, empty the dishwasher, and ensure we have enough milk, not to mention setting up the coffee pot for the morning. Even as I lay down at night, my mind continues to race, crafting tomorrow’s to-do list while adding unfinished tasks from today.
There’s always tomorrow.
