Family Bonding: A Reflection on Bicycle Adventures and Modern Alternatives
It is often said that riding a bike is a skill one never forgets. However, my recent attempt at cycling left me questioning that notion entirely. The last time I hopped on a bicycle, the experience felt utterly foreign.
As a child, I cherished the memories of cycling alongside my father. We would glide by the water, admiring beautiful homes and vibrant flowers; those were delightful moments. Yet, as an adult, the reality struck—my balance was nonexistent, and the discomfort of the seat was far worse than any pain I had experienced during childbirth. After an embarrassing tumble, I quickly abandoned the idea of cycling, opting instead for the comfort of four wheels. Since then, I have navigated the roads in my minivan, often scowling at the cyclists who seem to invade my space. We clearly belong to different worlds.
This past weekend, however, my partner, Tom, removed the training wheels from our daughter Lily’s bike. In just a few hours, he had her confidently racing up and down the street, radiating pride and independence. Watching her brought forth a wave of nostalgia and an inkling of curiosity about what could be. I envisioned our family cycling together, clad in matching spandex shorts and helmets, enjoying picnics at national parks on lazy Sunday afternoons. Perhaps we could even bike to a local café, feeling the satisfying burn in our thighs.
But then reality set back in. I am well aware of my limitations and can happily live without a bike. My minivan is undoubtedly the best mode of transportation for our family, allowing us to travel comfortably without the risk of walking awkwardly for days afterward. That said, I might still consider those matching sweatshirts; that level of family bonding is something I can embrace.
