Home Alone: A New Parenting Adventure
Upon returning from a brief getaway, I found myself reflecting on an unprecedented experience: leaving my children home alone for the first time without adult supervision. Before anyone rushes to report me to the authorities, it’s worth noting that half of my children are, technically, adults. Yes, according to their official documentation, they qualify as such. Legally, I was in the clear.
However, despite their quasi-adult status, the decision was not without its stressors. In fact, as the departure date loomed closer, I noticed my anxiety manifesting in the form of increased hair loss and an unsettling feeling in my stomach. My imagination ran wild with alarming headlines: “Irresponsible Parents Meet Tragic Fate,” “Home Alone Kids Arrested for Food Theft,” and “Negligent Homeowners Face $20,000 in Damages.” What was I thinking?
For the record, I often engage in spirited debates with my partner about everything from parenting strategies to furniture arrangements. Yet, when he suggested a solo trip over six months ago, I felt it was a battle I could concede; the advantages seemed to outweigh the drawbacks. We scored an incredible deal on our accommodations and flights, our eldest was nearing 21, and the younger three were mostly self-sufficient (personal hygiene aside, which is a persistent teenage issue). Additionally, our neighborhood watch was reliable, and I felt confident that my children understood the stakes: my phone would be as reliable as the Batphone should any chaos ensue.
As the six-month countdown reached its final days, I still grappled with uncertainty. “I was left alone for a week at your age,” my partner reminded me. I simply gave him the look—the universal signal of disbelief shared among wives everywhere.
In preparation, I cooked in advance, crafted and revised numerous lists, reached out to every neighbor in proximity, and issued stern warnings to my kids regarding potential consequences for any misbehavior. If chaos ensued in my absence, I was determined to respond firmly.
With a couple of friends who also appreciated a good happy hour, we set off for Myrtle Beach for three days. It was a delightful locale, albeit sweltering in August—perhaps a contributing factor to the prevalence of happy hours in South Carolina.
Though three days may not seem extensive, we made the most of our time. We lounged by the pool during the day and enjoyed our evenings at local bars, sharing plenty of laughs in the process. My kids checked in occasionally, with only one concerned message from our neighborhood watch. When I realized the house remained intact and my children were managing to coexist peacefully, I found myself able to relax.
Our return was met with a sense of relief from my daughter, who expressed her joy at our homecoming while sinking into the couch beside me. “I am so glad you’re back,” she sighed. Turns out, the responsibility of holding down the fort can be quite taxing.
My middle son excitedly called me over to showcase a “surprise.” He proudly pointed to the centerpiece fruit bowl, which contained a remarkably overripe banana and a couple of apples that seemed to date back to the Clinton administration. In a moment of horror, I watched as a cloud of fruit flies erupted from the bowl. Note to self: “Throw out rotting fruit” must be added to the pre-trip list next time.
Will there be a next time? Perhaps down the line, but I think I need to allow my stress levels to stabilize before contemplating such an adventure again.

Ultimately, a brief getaway can provide much-needed relaxation, but it may come with unexpected surprises at home.
