Supermom and That Silica Gel: A Cautionary Tale
It was an ordinary Friday evening when I returned home from work, greeted by my husband, a dedicated stay-at-home dad, who wore a look of fatigue after a long day with our rambunctious 2-year-old. After unloading the groceries, he promptly announced his intention to take a much-deserved nap.
In true supermom fashion, I had anticipated this moment and had picked up a rotisserie chicken from Costco, despite my husband’s usual concerns regarding its lack of organic certification. Tonight, I thought, we would indulge in some antibiotic- and hormone-laden chicken.
Dressed in my Wonder Woman pajama pants, I set the table with the chicken, a Costco croissant, and an organic Fuji apple for our son. As he devoured his meal, I noticed a pile of packages on the kitchen table containing frames I had ordered for his school photos. I figured I could multitask—while he ate, I could frame the pictures. This was definitely a redeeming move for serving him non-organic chicken!
While my husband dozed in the other room, I was focused on securing my son’s well-being. After asking him to finish chewing his food (my way of preventing any choking hazard), I turned on the TV, which exclusively played Paw Patrol, and dashed to the restroom for a quick break.
In under two minutes, I returned to find my son surrounded by the remnants of the picture frame boxes. To my horror, he was holding a silica gel desiccant packet that clearly stated “DO NOT EAT.” My heart dropped as I recalled the warning and swiftly removed it from his small hands.
He insisted he had “eaten it,” and my instincts kicked in as I scanned the table and found an empty packet, dampened with his saliva. Panic surged through me; I could feel the adrenaline coursing as I yelled for my husband. My voice barely roused him from his nap, but once I burst into the room, he quickly understood the urgency of the situation.
I grabbed my husband’s phone to call Poison Control, which thankfully was in his contacts. A calm voice answered, and I explained the situation. To my immense relief, she assured me that this was a common call. The packet itself posed a choking hazard, but the silica beads were harmless as long as he was breathing and not in distress. After a few quick questions, she disconnected the call.
My husband entered the room, sensing the tension had eased. I shared the reassuring news with him, but then I broke down, overwhelmed by the near-miss. Meanwhile, our son, oblivious to the chaos, had begun picking up the beads from the floor and attempting to eat them. We swiftly intervened, cleared his mouth, and removed him from the area while I continued to sob.
In a moment of clarity, my husband consoled me, reminding me that our son had never been in real danger. He then turned his attention to the laundry, leaving me to collect myself. Reflecting on the evening, I realized we had survived yet another chaotic Friday night. Perhaps I deserved those Wonder Woman pajamas after all.
But seriously, that silica gel is no joke.
