Summer Camp for Adults: No Counselors, Just Fun!
Last June, my partner and I had the unique opportunity to attend a Bat Mitzvah at a sleepaway camp nestled in the Poconos. Over the course of two days, we found ourselves without a reliable phone signal, indulging in camp cuisine, sipping bug juice, and resting on sleeping bags atop mini cot-sized beds in same-gender bunks with fellow attendees we hardly knew.
And let me tell you, it was absolutely exhilarating! Sure, I had to navigate a bathroom crowded with ten other girls vying for a glimpse in the single small mirror above the sink to prepare for the Saturday night dance party, but there were s’mores! And Coronas! Not to mention an unforgettable tug-of-war competition! Plus, I embraced the spirit of the event by sporting face paint and a blue tutu throughout the weekend—because, you know, we’ve got spirit, yes we do!
As summer approaches, this marks the fifth year that one or both of my children will be off to sleepaway camp, and I won’t deny feeling a twinge of envy each time I watch the bus pull away from the designated pick-up area. Apparently, I’m not alone in this sentiment. A company named Camp No Counselors has recognized this desire for nostalgic fun and offers specially curated weekends filled with activities and libations for adults at various camps across the nation.
Founded by Ben Thompson in 2013, Camp No Counselors was inspired by an event he organized for friends. “I realized that as adults, we often find ourselves in situations where confidence is expected, leaving little room for vulnerability,” he explains on the Camp No Counselors website. “Camp provided that rare opportunity. I witnessed accomplished individuals shed their professional personas and embrace their authentic selves. It was an experience that needed to be shared with others.”
Upcoming Camp Dates
If you’re intrigued, upcoming camp dates include:
- June 4-7 in Chicago

Additionally, the weekend culminates in a camp-wide talent show, where it’s common for participants to perform in front of newfound friends. And yes, there’s an open bar throughout the weekend—Bloody Marys at breakfast, anyone?—for those who appreciate a little liquid courage when stepping into the spotlight.
