Navigating Bedtime: A New Parent’s Perspective
As a new mother, I find myself acutely aware of every passing moment. It has been ten weeks, five days, and four hours since my life changed forever. I often count down the minutes until bedtime, a ritual that has become my daily survival tactic. Miraculously, we’ve made it through each day without any major disasters—no one has been seriously harmed, and aside from a minor disagreement over swaddling techniques, we are generally content. In this new realm of swaddles, bumbos, and sleep training, reaching bedtime without significant meltdowns is a small victory.
However, as the day draws to a close, feelings of guilt begin to creep in. This guilt is insidious, often more challenging to face than the overt frustration expressed by my little one when she’s unhappy with her feeding. Unlike her straightforward emotions, guilt quietly infiltrates my mind, preying on my insecurities.
Several times a day, I feel overwhelmed by the weight of motherhood—the expectations placed upon me, the emotional whirlwind that accompanies caring for a tiny human. I often hear that inner voice whispering, “Shouldn’t you be enjoying this? Many others would love to be in your position.”
Postpartum depression, like guilt, is complex and unpredictable. Its intensity can fluctuate, with periods of improvement followed by setbacks. My life has turned upside down: Will I raise my daughter well? What if she resents me? What if she encounters harm or, worse yet, turns out to be a celebrity like Miley Cyrus?
While my little Hazel is my joy and my heart, there are days when I wish for a brief respite—a long nap for her would allow me to reclaim a sliver of normalcy. I long to cook with both hands, take a much-needed shower, or simply sleep.
For now, I find solace in knowing that there are still 5.5 hours until bedtime, and thankfully, all is well. WIN.
