I Am More Than Just Your Mother
As we navigate the journey of parenthood, there are moments that reveal our own parents as individuals, rather than merely as authority figures. This realization often strikes when we hear stories of their youthful escapades or witness them behaving in ways that surprise us. For instance, perhaps it was during a family gathering where your mother’s playful side emerged, leaving you both amused and slightly embarrassed. Such instances remind us that our parents have their own identities, separate from their roles in our lives—a concept that can be quite astonishing.
As a mother, I often ponder how my children will eventually view me. Right now, they idolize me, seeking my presence and affection constantly. It’s a delightful yet exhausting phase that I cherish. However, I know that this adoration may wane as they enter their teenage years. I can only hope that they will see me as a person again, not just as “mom.”
To help bridge that gap, I thought it might be beneficial to share a few reminders with my children about who I am beyond motherhood.
Dear kids,
- Just like I learned about my parents, understand: you weren’t delivered by a stork. Think about it.
- Although I may seem older, I can still hit the dance floor with the best of them. While I can’t predict what I’ll be grooving to in my later years, I’ll always have a soft spot for classic hits like “Baby Got Back.”
- My concern about your college journey partly stems from my own adventures, like the time I consumed an entire bottle of Hawkeye Vodka while writing a midterm paper. Spoiler: it didn’t end well for my grades.
- The legends of Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny share the same handwriting for a reason…
- I might not be “allergic” to cats, and the music didn’t stop because Justin “Beaver” went to jail. Sometimes, I embellish the truth—just a little.
- I, too, kept secrets from my parents. Newsflash: they usually found out.
- Yes, I have celebrity crushes. If you ever read my blog, you might discover who they are.
- Household chores like laundry, taking out the trash, and making beds? I find them just as tedious as you do.
With love,
Your mom

In summary, while the role of a mother is significant, it’s essential to remember that we are multifaceted individuals with our own stories, interests, and experiences. Embracing this complexity can enrich our relationships with our children.
