How We Navigated Parenting Challenges for a Day of Connection
Parenting Insights
A couple of years back, my partner, Sam, and I had established a delightful routine. Each Sunday, we hired a babysitter to care for our then 3-year-old daughter, Mia, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This time allowed us to indulge in brunch, enjoy leisurely strolls in our Brooklyn neighborhood, and connect as a couple after a busy week focused on work and family obligations.
These three hours felt like a prelude to a more intimate experience, as we would relieve the babysitter at 1 p.m., settle Mia down for her afternoon nap, and retreat to our bedroom for some quality time together. However, this idyllic setup came to an abrupt end when Mia transitioned out of her napping phase.
Fast forward a few years: Mia is now 5 and in kindergarten. Both Sam and I work from home, juggling our professional responsibilities while managing Mia’s after-school needs. Our budget is tight, but we cherish the quality time we spend with Mia, especially when school is in session. However, when breaks arise, they present a different set of challenges.
As spring break approached, we faced the typical parental anxiety of how to entertain Mia for an entire week without the luxury of a vacation or babysitting options. In our frantic attempts to organize playdates and scout out new movies for her to enjoy, we received an email from her school announcing a spring break camp. Excitement bubbled among the parents in Mia’s class, sharing their plans for various camp days.
Mia opted for Arts & Crafts Wednesday, which promised a day filled with creativity, outdoor play, and gardening—her favorite activities. Unfortunately, by the time I registered her, the bowling day was full, but I happily paid $90 for Wednesday, confident that it would be a fun experience for her.
The thought struck me: Sam and I also deserved a day of enjoyment. Thus, I proposed we declare it “Foreplay Day Date and Sex Wednesday.”
When the day arrived, we were eager to drop Mia off at camp. However, upon our arrival, we noticed several disconcerting signs. Although the entrance was open, there were no clear indicators of where the camp activities were taking place.
Sam and I exchanged glances, wondering if we had perhaps misread the situation. Other parents appeared equally confused, and we followed sounds of children to the cafeteria, only to find a sparse setup of self-guided activities. As I observed the scene, my mind raced with concerns for Mia’s safety and welfare.
Nevertheless, we masked our apprehensions and encouraged Mia to explore the crayons and paper. After a quick goodbye, we left without any adult supervision in sight. Outside, we both sighed in relief, though I couldn’t shake the nagging fear that any child could easily wander off unnoticed.
As we ventured into our day date—dining, sipping prosecco, and enjoying each other’s company—the time flew by. Soon enough, it was time to pick Mia up. She ran towards us with excitement, but when I inquired about her day, she dramatically exhaled and expressed her disappointment about not engaging in the planned activities.
By dinner, however, Mia had bounced back, and I realized that despite the day’s lacks, the school—while perhaps not the best for that day—was generally reputable.
As summer vacation began, Mia was set to attend camp for the month of July, and I was confident she would thrive there. Next spring break, I planned to register her promptly for the school camp, ensuring she participated only in field trip days. I also made a mental note to stock up on prosecco.
