Dear Ambitious Room Moms,

I have always admired your ability to stay organized, send out timely emails, create thoughtful gifts for teachers, and organize unforgettable class parties. However, when I became a Room Mom myself, I quickly realized that my aspirations were far from reality.

If you feel inclined to go above and beyond on your own, that’s great! If you want to serenade the teacher with a personalized rendition of the “12 Days of Christmas” while presenting an extravagant array of gifts, feel free. Personally, I am no longer interested in competing over who can give the “best” gift.

When did we reach this point? Why am I being tasked with crafting projects at home for an end-of-year teacher gift? Isn’t that the responsibility of the Room Mom? I fully support showing appreciation for our teachers—they deserve recognition for their hard work and dedication. However, I believe the focus should be on what makes the teacher’s life better, rather than showcasing our own creativity.

The gifts we give should reflect our appreciation for the teachers, not serve as a platform for us to demonstrate our crafting skills. I would rather give a gift that a teacher genuinely wants, rather than something that will be discarded or forgotten.

Four Straightforward Room Mom Guidelines

  1. No Pinterest Access: Room Moms should refrain from using Pinterest throughout their term.
  2. No Additional Tasks for Parents: Avoid asking parents to assemble items or participate in activities that add to their already busy schedules.
  3. Determine Meaningful Gifts: Use one of two methods to ascertain what gift would truly delight the teacher:
    • Gift Registry/Wish List: Similar to a bridal registry, teachers can create a list of desired items at the start of the year. Collect contributions from parents to purchase gifts that the teacher genuinely wants.
    • Survey: Have the teacher participate in a fun online survey to identify their preferences. Collect funds and select gifts accordingly.
  4. Digital Fund Collection: Use a dedicated Room Mom website to collect contributions from parents. By providing a “donate” button, parents can contribute any amount anonymously, alleviating any pressure or awkwardness. This method eliminates the need for cash collections through children and ensures that funds are secure.

This approach seems efficient and effective, and I might even consider volunteering as a Room Mom next year!
