The 10 Most Absurd Statements I’ve Made to My Toddlers
Parenting has a unique way of transforming our language. As a mother, I’ve found myself uttering some of the most nonsensical phrases imaginable. It’s as if the demands of raising little ones compel me to ask questions and make statements that leave me pondering their meaning. Here are ten of the most ridiculous things I’ve recently said to my toddlers:
- “If you don’t get your shoes on, I’m leaving without you.” Honestly, where could I possibly go without them? The backyard? The garage?
- “Do you want me to spank you?” Let’s be real; what child would ever respond affirmatively to this question?
- “If you don’t clean up that mess, you’re going straight to bed.” It’s two in the afternoon—bedtime is a long way off!
- “If you don’t stop, I’m turning this car around and we’re going home.” This threat only seems to materialize on days when we have important appointments, like at the doctor’s office or preschool.
- “You have 30 seconds to get those toys cleaned up, or I’m throwing them all away.” The effort involved in tossing out all those toys is overwhelming; I have no intention of actually doing that.
- “If you don’t eat, I’m not giving you any more dinner.” This statement is fundamentally illogical.
- “I’m going to count to three, and you better stop, or else.” Even I’m unsure what “or else” entails.
- “Are you trying to make me mad?” My toddlers don’t consciously aim to frustrate me; they simply act obliviously while I feel my sanity slipping away.
- “If you don’t start listening, I’m going to stop talking.” A rather ironic statement to make when I am clearly speaking to toddlers who aren’t paying attention.
- “If you don’t stop playing with your food, I’m taking it away.” In reality, if they’re not eating, they likely aren’t hungry.
As my children grow, I realize I must adapt my communication style. It seems they have the upper hand more often than I’d like to admit. Until then, they have 30 seconds to comply, or else!
