During a recent conference in New York City, I had the chance to chat with a well-known author, Sarah Mitchell, who had just released her latest book, “Flourish: The New Way to Define Success and Live a Life of Happiness.” As someone who spends a lot of time pondering happiness and habits, I couldn’t help but be drawn to her insights. Here’s a glimpse into our conversation about what keeps Sarah thriving.

What’s a simple habit that consistently boosts your happiness?

I’ve made it a point to weave certain practices into my daily routine—like meditation, exercise, and taking walks. However, the most impactful habit for me is conscious breathing. It’s amazing how taking a moment to focus on my breath can create pauses in my day, ground me in the present, and help me rise above challenges.

What’s something you’ve learned about building healthy habits since you were 18?

I’ve come to realize just how vital sleep is. Getting enough rest has made a world of difference in my productivity, effectiveness, and overall enjoyment of life. Back when I was 18, I didn’t value sleep nearly as much!

Are there any habits that hinder your happiness?

Oh, definitely—my phones. Yes, phones—plural. I often find myself mindlessly scrolling, even in places like doctors’ waiting rooms, which ironically became a reflective space for me to evaluate my life choices.

How would you classify yourself—an Upholder, a Questioner, a Rebel, or an Obliger?

I’d say I’m an Obliger, or maybe a recovering one! I’ve long battled with the expectations I place on myself. I refer to that critical voice in my head as my obnoxious roommate, which can really deter me from pursuing my dreams. To quiet that inner critic, I remind myself of Montaigne’s wise words: “Many terrible things happened to me in my life, but most never occurred.”

Have you ever made a sudden change to a major habit due to a pivotal moment?

Yes, indeed! On April 6, 2007, I experienced a wake-up call while lying on the floor of my home office after collapsing from sheer exhaustion. I ended up visiting multiple doctors to rule out any serious issues. Thankfully, they all confirmed it was just burnout. Those waiting rooms turned out to be perfect spots for me to reassess my life. This experience pushed me to make substantial changes, adopting daily practices that prioritize my well-being. Now, my life is much more fulfilling, providing me with valuable breathing space and perspective.
