A Morning in the Life of a Working Mom
5:30 AM – Up bright and early because I need ALL the time I can get.
5:31 AM – Contemplate brewing a hot drink to savor during my precious 15 minutes of solitude. I tiptoe down the stairs in the dark, phone flashlight in hand, feeling a bit like a ninja.
5:31 AM – Unfortunately, my toddler has the hearing of a hawk and instantly senses my movement.
5:32 AM – I freeze, hoping for a miracle that she might drift back to sleep.
5:33 AM – Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work. “Mama! Wake!” she chirps, full of unexpected energy despite her late-night binky search. I worry her cheerfulness might be short-lived if I acknowledge it.
5:33 AM – I assist her on and off the potty for the next few minutes, only feeling mildly guilty about how cold the toilet seat must be thanks to my husband’s arctic thermostat settings.
5:34 AM – My guilt wanes as her cheerful demeanor begins to crumble, thanks to a thwarted hand-washing obsession.
6:15 AM – Time to rouse my older child, thanking the universe for at least one kid who wakes up in a good mood. Mental note: be nice today to keep the good karma rolling into his teenage years!
7:00 AM – After a chaotic scramble, everyone is fed, hydrated, and prepped for the day—everyone except me, of course. I do snag a lukewarm beverage…because priorities.
7:30 AM – I realize I completely forgot about the all-important Pull-Up-Character-Negotiations.
7:35 AM – Just as the bus is about to arrive, my older one remembers a mountain of things: a form that needs signing, his library book, and oh, it’s rollerblading day! He also suddenly wants to bring cookies for his teacher’s birthday.
7:40 AM – Time to channel my inner superhero as I gather everything, sign forms, and rush him out the door. His dad, still half-asleep, helps ensure he makes it to the bus on time.
7:45 AM – I try to break the news to the toddler that Dad will take her to the babysitter today. She cheerfully responds with “Okay!”—clearly, she doesn’t grasp the situation. And I hope I can dodge the fallout when she does.
7:50 AM – Outside, I start warming up the car. In her frantic need for proximity, my toddler fiddles with the doorknob and locks me out while her dad is at the bus stop with her brother. Yep, that really just happened.
7:51 AM – I attempt to explain the door mechanism to her from outside, but then I remember she didn’t comprehend my earlier announcement. Panic sets in until I realize I let the dog out upstairs. Thank you, universe!
7:52 AM – I miraculously manage to get back inside. What a relief! That could have been a seriously awkward interaction with a neighbor.
7:55 AM – I bid my toddler farewell (freedom is so close!) and notice she’s somehow dressed herself in her coat and backpack. She hugs me and says “Bye, Mommy!” Then it dawns on her—Dad is driving her to the babysitter today.
7:57 AM – Cue the drama. I slip out and escape.
8:00 AM – As I drive down the driveway, I realize my hot beverage is now lukewarm. Regardless, I chalk this morning up as a major win.
