Motherhood: A Journey into the Quirky Unknown
Motherhood is an amazing, transformative experience that reshapes you in ways you never imagined. Before you know it, you might find yourself at the grocery store in your pajamas, congratulating your daughter for her latest bathroom triumph while simultaneously contemplating how many boxes of mac and cheese would keep the week’s whining at bay.
People will often praise you for being a fantastic mom, and for a while, you’ll believe it. But then reality hits: you look up from your phone after 15 minutes of scrolling on the loo, only to discover that your toddler is on a mission to create confetti from your unpaid bills. In that moment, you realize just how much motherhood has altered your perception of what is normal—and it’s a little terrifying.
After the “scissor incident,” I started to take stock of my actions. Who is this strange woman? Did she just clean her son’s face with her finger and then wipe it on her shirt? Is it seriously 2:30 PM and she’s still in her pajamas? What is going on here?
I assure you, I’m fine. Really. But as I observe myself in my new environment, I can’t help but admit that I’ve picked up a few odd habits that make me want to crawl into a hole and disappear:
- When I notice dried snot on the wall, I just pretend it’s not there. Ain’t nobody got time for that mess!
- I find myself making “That’s what she said” jokes when my kids say things like, “Mom! Look at this giant pickle!”
- Sometimes lunch for me is a distant memory. When I forget to feed myself, I turn into a ravenous beast, scavenging for leftover food on my kids’ plates. Score!
- When my kids aren’t listening, I turn to the wise words of Clara from Daniel Tiger to get them to do what I want. “Friends help each other, yes they do!” Thanks for having my back, buddy!
- If I actually manage to shower before 2:30 PM, it’s usually because I’m late for something important. In that case, I’ll multitask by brushing my teeth and sipping coffee while I’m in the shower. I know, I’m impressive.
- My kids inspire me to create silly songs, and yes, they often have poop-themed lyrics. Some of my top hits include: “She’s a super poop, super poop!” and “Drop it like it’s poop, drop it like it’s poop.”
- During hide-and-seek, when it’s my turn to count, I snuggle under a blanket on the couch and see how high I can go before they get bored. One hundred and thirty-five, one hundred and thirty-six… so peaceful!
- Lastly, I’ve become a master butt crack inspector. After years of diaper duty, I’ve passed on my knowledge to my kids, and I’m frankly impressed with the streak-free undies I see in the laundry these days.
Motherhood is definitely a wild and wacky ride, but I can assure you it’s just as wonderful as everyone says. You’re going to be okay, too. If you ever need a break, just sneak away to the bathroom, shut the door, and soak in those five precious minutes of quiet… oh wait, not today, Mom!
