The Surprising Age of Young Parents
You know that moment when someone learns how old your kids are and their jaw drops? Yeah, it happens to me all the time. Whether it’s a random stranger making small talk, another mom at the park, or colleagues during lunch, I often hear, “Wait, how old are you?”
I get it; they don’t mean anything by it, but honestly, it’s getting a bit tired. Sure, I’m younger than most parents of tweens, and when people find out I’m just 29, I often feel the need to clarify that my 12-year-old is my stepson to avoid the judgmental side-eyes. I didn’t have my first child at 16; I was 19—still young, but not that young! Even if I had been 16, does it really matter? I’m at all the same events as you: basketball games, orchestra concerts, and parent-teacher meetings. I’m stressing over grades, the internet, and the whole dating scene, just like you.
Why Those “You’re So Young” Comments Don’t Land as Compliments
So, here’s why those “you’re so young” comments don’t really land as compliments:
- When you say I’m too young to have kids, I mentally face-palm. I have kids, and they’re older than yours, so clearly, your assessment is off the mark.
- Would you ever ask a woman who looks to be in her forties how old she is while she’s wrangling toddlers? No way, right? That would be rude!
- I’m often reminded of the phrase, “When I was your age…” Well, when I’m your age, my kids will be in their twenties. Sounds like a plan to me!
- It undermines my capabilities as a parent. Just because I became a mom young doesn’t mean I care any less than you do—it’s almost like you think I can’t handle it.
- Historically, girls were having kids at 16, so let’s keep some perspective here. I’m not saying that’s ideal, but it’s a different time now.
- And by the way, I’d never respond to your “you’re so young” comment with “Well, you’re just old.” That’s not how I roll!
Let’s respect each other’s journeys. We’re all in this parenting gig together, no matter what age we started—19, 27, or even 42. Plus, you might actually learn something from me. I was a kid not too long ago, after all.

In Summary
In summary, the next time you find yourself surprised by a young parent, remember that age doesn’t define capability. We’re all here figuring this out together, no matter when we started.
