My Kids Watch Way Too Much TV, and I’m Totally Fine With It
You know how back in the day, there were video rental stores that would have movies playing to lure you in? That’s pretty much my household right now. The TV is constantly running some animated show to keep my kiddos entertained between their meltdowns, messes, and the never-ending chaos that comes with parenting.
I used to feel a twinge of guilt about it. I’ve seen the studies claiming that too much screen time could lead to all sorts of problems, and I often questioned my parenting choices. But honestly? I’m so done feeling guilty. Watching TV actually has some major perks for my kids, and here are a few reasons why:
1. They Learn New Things
Thanks to shows like “Super Why,” my little one can recognize most of her letters, and “Sesame Street” has helped her count to twenty. Sure, I play a role in her learning, but if given a choice between watching superheroes or sitting with me doing flashcards, I think we’d all prefer the fun method.
2. Funny Phrases Galore
My son once said, “Mom, me up chuck you!” which meant he wanted to play doctor like on “Daniel Tiger.” His version of “ugga mugga” came before he could say “I love you,” but I knew what he meant from the cute kisses he’d give me. Kids pick up hilarious phrases every day!
3. Boosts Their Imagination
How else would my kids know about superheroes or space travel? They’re always zooming around in capes or warning me about dinosaur invasions. I honestly think without TV, it would take them ages to grasp these imaginative concepts.
4. A Much-Needed Break for Me
Call me lazy, but I’ve got two toddlers who require my full attention from dawn to dusk. Sometimes, I just need a breather. So, I hand them a snack, turn on their favorite show, and take a moment for myself amidst the Lego chaos.
5. Guaranteed Cuddle Time
As wild as my kids can be, it’s tough to get them to slow down for a cuddle. But when I take a break on the couch, my daughter often asks to sit with me, and I cherish those quiet moments while we watch “Peg and Cat” together.
6. Makes Me a Better Parent
Seriously! The songs from “Daniel Tiger” have infiltrated my daily life, helping me teach my kids to clean up and express their feelings. Plus, the lessons from animated parents have made me more patient and loving.
Okay, maybe I’ve exaggerated a bit about how much TV they watch. They probably do watch more than average, but I’m over apologizing for it. My kids watch TV, and honestly, I’m cool with that.

In summary, while the TV might be on a lot at my place, it’s not the end of the world. It offers my kids learning opportunities, enhances their creativity, and gives me a little bit of breathing room. So, let’s embrace the chaos and the screen time!
