Change Is in the Air
So, picture this: Rose’s mom, Susan, is all worked up about Atticus’s Jewish background and how that might throw a wrench in their romance. Meanwhile, Atticus’s dad, Lord Sinderby, is totally appalled by the news of Rose’s parents getting a divorce, thinking it’s a disgrace. It’s like a gathering of grumpy folks, making for one of the most cringe-worthy dinners in a series full of those!
As if Rose wasn’t already stressed, she gets a bunch of scandalous photos of Atticus from his wild bachelor party the night before. Turns out, pre-wedding antics have been a thing since post-WWI England! Rose trusts her fiancé and thinks the photos are just some mean prank—Tom reassures her that it’s all part of the typical stag do—but she’s left wondering who would send something so nasty. Clearly, one of the disgruntled parents is trying to ruin things for them, making it hard to point fingers.
Eventually, Rose’s dad, Shrimpy, uncovers that it’s Susan who orchestrated this low blow, which is pretty desperate for a mother trying to stop her daughter’s wedding. But surprise, surprise—Rose and Atticus still tie the knot despite all the family drama. These two have some serious determination, managing to push past their parents’ petty issues.
As Rose gets ready to leave Downton for what she hopes is a happy marriage, Tom is also contemplating a move to America to work with his cousin in Boston. With Violet’s backing, Isobel is finding the courage to pursue her engagement to Lord Merton, even with his sons being such naysayers. In the staff quarters, Daisy is even considering a move to London after her recent education.
Life at Downton is shifting rapidly, and Mary is not thrilled about it. She’s feeling the weight of these changes, especially the thought of being stuck with Edith. After ending things with various suitors, including Tony, Mary is struggling to find her place and purpose outside her childhood home.
On the flip side, Edith is thriving—well, thriving by her standards—now that she gets to be with her child. Her happiness is so noticeable that Mary quips she’s acting like she “invented motherhood.” Lord Grantham notices this shift too and, while he suspects the child looks like Mr. Gregson, he decides to keep it under wraps and even feel some affection for his illegitimate grandchild.
And just when you think the drama is winding down, Anna gets arrested for Mr. Green’s murder. While love has triumphed over family drama in some storylines, will Bates’s love for Anna be enough to clear her name? Fingers crossed that the next Christmas episode wraps this up nicely!
