Is the Gym Music Too Loud for You?

Hey there! Ever walk out of your spin class and feel like your ears are ringing? You’re definitely not alone! A recent article in the Washington Post highlighted a study from Australia’s National Acoustic Laboratories that compared sound levels in fitness classes from 2009 to 2011 to those from the late ’90s. The results showed that the volume has been creeping up, with some classes reaching a whopping 99 decibels!

To put that into perspective, adults can safely tolerate 85 decibels for up to eight hours and 94 decibels for just one hour, according to Dr. Lucy Hart, an audiology expert at the University of Northern Colorado and co-director of the Dangerous Decibels initiative that tackles noise-induced hearing loss. For reference, a normal conversation is around 65 decibels. Dr. Hart suggests that gym music should really be toned down to 85 decibels max.

Feeling like the beats in your class are way too loud? You might want to grab some earplugs next time.
