Elton John: ‘I Never Imagined Becoming a Dad’
The iconic “Rocket Man” has a passion for performing live, but nothing compares to the joy he feels for his two young boys with his longtime partner, Alex. In an engaging chat with our friend, Jamie, the 67-year-old superstar opens up about parenthood, inspiration, and his thoughts on stepping back from the stage.
What do you love most about your shows in Las Vegas?
It’s more thrilling now than ever before! This show is unlike anything I’ve done before. The production is spectacular, and the audience is incredible—it’s fantastic who you might run into on any given night, from celebs to fans visiting from all around the globe.
How does the excitement of performing stack up against raising little ones?
I always knew it would be magical, but it’s even more enchanting than I could have imagined. I’ve been involved with many children’s charities, so I’ve got plenty of godchildren. But honestly, I never thought I’d find myself as a father one day. As long as Alex and I teach Zachary and Elijah to be kind and loving, I’ll be completely fulfilled. The little soul you’re nurturing and sharing bedtime stories with is like a blank canvas, and all it needs is love and care.
Do your kids inspire your music?
Having children changes everything. It inevitably influences my music in some way or another.
With so many hits to your name, is it tough to outdo yourself?
I’ve never experienced writer’s block. I don’t write every day; I like to take breaks to feel inspired and hungry to create again. It’s like a lion that doesn’t eat for a while before going for the kill—it’s all about timing for me. I can’t write daily, and I’ve never grown tired of it.
Retirement doesn’t seem to be on your horizon. Do you ever think about it?
Not at all! I’m a total workaholic. I have loads of energy, I work hard, and I’m so lucky to have a wonderful partner in Alex, along with our two amazing boys. I try to live healthily, but my life might not be as balanced as it should be, so maybe I’ll ease up a bit soon.
What’s your long-term vision?
I prefer not to plan too far ahead. I like the element of surprise—who knows what opportunity might come my way? One gig or project can change everything, so I’m just focused on continuing to create great work.
What excites you about life?
For me, love is the driving force. I adore my partner and my sons, and I’m passionate about what I do. In a world filled with negativity and unrest, I want to spread love through my life and my music. That’s what keeps me motivated, and I feel incredibly blessed to have the life I do.
