A Farewell from Young Leo to Old Leo

Hey Leonard,

Even though we share a unique bond through our Vulcan friend, we haven’t crossed paths too often—maybe just three or four times. It feels a bit odd writing to you like this, especially since our encounters have been so brief. I’m sure your close friends and family have tons of stories to share. Still, there’s something special about film—frozen moments that connect us across time and space, even if it’s not about our true selves.

Perhaps this connection isn’t about who we are as individuals, but rather as actors, each of us a humble messenger of Spock’s legacy, destined to be remembered long after he fades from memory. I truly hope this legendary character, the embodiment of human logic that we’ve dedicated parts of our lives to, will endure for many centuries.

I think our first meeting was back at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas during the summer of 2009 when I was just 14. Before going on stage with Zach, we bumped into each other backstage. I can’t recall the exact words you used, but your vibe was humble and friendly. I hate to pull the “Celebrities: They’re Just Like Us” card, but you genuinely felt like an approachable uncle or grandpa. From what I’ve heard, you’ve never shown an ounce of arrogance, and it was refreshing to see that your fame hadn’t dulled your kindness.

Unfortunately, I can’t remember our actual conversation, but maybe the true essence of communication goes beyond words—it’s about the feelings we share. And I’m sure your sentiment was nothing but warm.

When we took the stage alongside the incredible Zachary Quinto in front of a sea of eager Trekkers, it was surreal. There’s even a video of it on YouTube if you want to relive that moment. It’s definitely one of the highlights of my life. We stood there, three people with not much to say, yet representing something so grand: a cultural phenomenon, the enduring legacy of Spock, and the joy our character has brought to so many.

At one point, you teased me about my enthusiasm to be charming and articulate, saying, “He’s not at all like he is in the movie, is he? He’s like, ya know, ‘hey, hey!’” It was the most accurate insight I’ve received! You shared a hug with Zach, wished us well as we left the stage, and turned to the audience with a smile to say, “Isn’t that great?” And it truly was more than words can capture.

Thank you for being such a wonderful person. The world is grateful for you. Live long and prosper, Mr. Nimoy.

Warmly,
Leo
