Hugh Jackman: “The Love for My Kids Took Me by Surprise”
In a casual chat with our friend, Jamie, Hugh Jackman opened up about his experience playing a villain, the powerful love he feels for his kids, and a nerve-wracking moment in a supermarket.
What was it like stepping into the shoes of a bad guy?
“Oh man, it was such a thrill! I had to double-check with the director if I was enjoying it a bit too much. Roles like that don’t come around often. My character thinks he’s created the ultimate robot and bets everything on its success. But when someone else beats him to the punch, he’ll stop at nothing to win. I mean, who really enjoys losing anyway?”
You’ve had quite the successful career. Does it ever feel like you’re just riding a wave of luck?
“It’s funny, it never feels like that from my perspective. There have been so many surprises along the way. I think it’s better to approach things as the underdog. I’ve worked hard and honestly, I’m still a bit amazed by all the opportunities I’ve had. Sure, I’ve let a few slip through my fingers too, especially before the days of YouTube. Now, every audition, whether good or bad, seems to pop up online!”
How was it in the beginning?
“Right after drama school, I made a pact with myself to give acting a shot for five years. I was 26 and had already spent eight years working odd jobs. I understood that acting is like running a small business; you have to invest everything into it first. Luckily, just before that five-year mark, I landed the role of Wolverine in X-Men—and the rest is history!”
Even with all your success, you always prioritize family.
“The love I have for my wife is profound, but nothing could have prepared me for the love I feel for my kids. It’s a different level of intensity. Just the thought of them in any danger or pain is unbearable. I’d jump in front of a bus for them! I remember this one time at the supermarket when I lost my son for about an hour. Let me tell you, that was the longest hour of my life!”
What do you find important in your daily life?
“I often hear people ask me how I can perform the same show night after night. But honestly, we all have our routines. We go through similar patterns in life. Each day gives us a new chance to deepen our experiences. My acting teacher once told me, ‘Acting is the best training for life,’ and he was spot on. It’s all about making every performance richer, isn’t it?”
