What’s Your Family Motto?
My kids love to joke that our family motto is “Hey, it’s time to do the dishes!” After our dishwasher decided to retire a few years back, we’ve been washing dishes the old-fashioned way. With more kids than spare cash, it feels like we’re living in a scene from Little House on the Prairie.
While “Time to do the dishes” may not win any awards for creativity, I believe it fosters teamwork and resilience—qualities that are sometimes missing in today’s youth. My kids roll their eyes and call me silly, to which I cheekily respond, “You’re not the boss of me!” (Another contender for family motto, perhaps.)
If your family hasn’t settled on a motto yet, don’t stress. I chatted with some fellow parents about their family phrases, and none of them are copyrighted. So go ahead, mix and match to find what fits your crew’s vibe and life’s challenges.
Family Motto Ideas
“We’ve got this.”
This phrase serves as a family pep talk for Kathy Rodriguez from Springfield, IL. It’s useful in all situations, whether it’s tackling a mountain of laundry or navigating tougher times like family illnesses. “We often tweak it to ‘You’ve got this’ when we’re offering support, but ‘We’ve got this’ is our go-to,” Kathy explains. “It’s important for our son to know that we’re in it together.”
“Be less helpless.”
Heidi Brown from Maplewood, NJ, shares her family motto, which comes into play when the kids ask for help with things they can handle themselves. “My teenagers remind me of it too! When I ask my son to reach something high, my daughter points to the footstool and says, ‘Mom, be less helpless!’ It works in all directions!”
“Seek and ye shall find.”
This classic was a favorite of Lorri’s mom, who would say it every time Lorri and her siblings lost something. “It was our family’s way of reminding us to look for our stuff instead of always asking her!”
“You must be confused.”
Lisa Grayson from New Jersey says her family uses this motto when her kids make outlandish requests. “When one of my teens asks if they can throw a huge party or avoid chores, someone usually says, ‘You must be confused.’ It helps keep reality in check!”
“Seriously?”
Jacqueline Lin from Austin, TX, has a slightly different take. “My husband thinks our motto is ‘Anything less than the best is a felony,’ but I prefer ‘Seriously?’ I used it when my daughter wanted to go out with a huge red marker drawing on her face as a ‘scar’ for her cosplay.”
“Be a toughie, not a fluffy.”
My sister, Emily, raised her kids with this motto, encouraging them to push through challenges. Another friend has a similar one: “If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” Just a heads up, though—sometimes it takes a while for kids to get on board with these lessons!
“Safe and happy.”
For Meg Parker, this motto sums up her parenting philosophy. “As long as the kids are safe and happy, everything else is just details,” she says. This motto resonates especially when another adult is watching her kids or when she’s solo parenting.
When life gets tough, remember that as a family, we’ll be there for each other—“We’ve got this.” We also aim to keep each other safe and cheer each other on. But let’s not forget to instill some practical skills and independence along the way. Honestly, “Time to do the dishes!” is just as good as any motto.
