Smoking Pot Doesn’t Make Me a Bad Mother
Motherhood and wine share a bond that’s hard to ignore—like peanut butter and jelly. There are all sorts of wine-themed sippy cups, mom-approved wine varieties, and countless onesies that celebrate the notion that sometimes, moms just need a little something to take the edge off. And honestly, who can blame us? Whatever helps us survive the chaos of the day is fair game.
But what about those of us who choose a different form of relaxation? Why can’t we share our experiences without fear of judgment? Here’s my truth: most nights after I tuck my kids in, I light up. Sometimes it’s a joint, other times it’s a cannabis-infused lollipop (which I keep safely locked away!), or occasionally it’s from a bong. After a long day filled with kids, work, practices, and chores, this has been my go-to for 15 years. And I’m done feeling guilty about it. Smoking pot doesn’t define me as a bad mother.
I don’t smoke out of necessity or a medical need; I simply appreciate the calming effect of a mellow high after a hectic day. It’s not much different from enjoying a glass of wine, right?
I’m not an irresponsible user; I don’t binge-drink or abuse prescriptions. I’m not lounging around all day in tie-dye eating junk food. I’m engaged with my children’s lives and active in the PTA (which, let’s be honest, might warrant a prescription for some relaxation!). I have a fulfilling job, a loving marriage, and while I might occasionally forget about dance class on Wednesdays AND Fridays, I’m mostly a productive and engaged member of society who happens to enjoy pot. What’s the big deal?
Choosing this lifestyle doesn’t compromise my morals or values, nor does it mean I’m setting my kids up for failure. Cannabis isn’t a gateway to some dark path; for me, it’s a healthier way to unwind.
Unfortunately, when I’ve opened up to other moms, I’ve faced skepticism and judgment. One mother even refused to let her child come over because she questioned my judgment—despite her own well-known struggles with painkillers and an open marriage.
So, I often find myself laughing along with the wine mom jokes, fitting in from a distance. Because, in a way, I’m part of that world—just with a different twist.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s almost lights out time, and I could really go for some Cheetos!
