10 Lessons I Want My 10-Year-Old Son to Remember
Hey there! As I sit down to share some thoughts with you, I can’t help but reflect on how important it is to lead by example. I hope I’ve been able to show you these values through my actions over the years. Here are ten key lessons I’d love for you to hold onto as you navigate the world.
- Respect Everyone: Treat all people with kindness, whether it’s your school principal or the person asking for help outside the store. You’ve got a natural instinct for this, and I hope you always keep it alive.
- Embrace Energy: It’s totally normal to be energetic and playful! I know I sometimes ask you to tone it down, but I’m learning to appreciate your zest for life. Just remember, there’s a line between fun and being hurtful.
- Understand Boundaries: When someone says “no,” it’s final. Respect that—no exceptions.
- Be Open About Feelings: You’re allowed to show your emotions. Feeling deeply is a strength, not a weakness. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
- Your Happiness is Your Own: You can’t make others happy, and that’s not your responsibility. What matters most is that you take care of yourself and treat those around you well. Your happiness comes from being true to yourself.
- Be Present: Life is full of small moments worth noticing. I loved when you realized that sometimes what you think you dislike might be something you miss. Paying attention can fill your days with joy and meaningful memories.
- Pursue Your Interests: Find what you’re passionate about! There’s a world of things to explore, and I’m here to support you, whether it’s sports, music, or something entirely different. Just don’t tell me you’re bored!
- Avoid Entitlement: Remember how lucky we are and be grateful. Even if I come down hard on you sometimes, it’s because I want you to understand the value of what we have.
- Stand Up for What’s Right: It’s not just the person leading the wrong actions who’s at fault; it’s those who go along with it too. Have the courage to stand firm against peer pressure when you see something wrong happening.
- Unconditional Love: No matter your mistakes, I will always love you. Life is about learning, and I hope you recognize the importance of owning up to your errors and trying again.
