Should You Create a Gift Registry for Your Child’s Birthday?
Hey there! Let’s chat about whether or not you should set up a gift registry for your kid’s birthday. A while back, I came across an interesting piece by Emma Wright in Parenting Today, where she pointed out that having a registry can shift the focus from celebrating friendships to just collecting presents. Kids might start to think they’ll receive everything they’ve asked for or that gifts only matter if they’re on their list. I totally get where she’s coming from.
When my kids get invited to parties, we love picking out a gift together. I’m not into getting a list from the parents; if that’s the case, I’d just hand over some cash and call it a day. Instead, we sit down at the computer (because who doesn’t love online shopping?) and browse for something special for their friend. I usually narrow it down to items that can be shipped quickly and are reasonably priced, so the kids can choose what they think will make their friend smile. They even write the card! Most of the time, the gifts get opened after the party when all the kiddos have gone home. I’m torn on whether it’s better to open gifts in front of everyone or save it for later. Smaller parties might benefit from the excitement of opening presents together, but big gatherings can get a little chaotic.
I also understand that some relatives appreciate a bit of direction when it comes to gifts for the kids. They genuinely want to make the little ones happy, and since they might not be as involved in their lives or know what’s trendy, a little help can go a long way. I’m more than happy to point them in the right direction or even send a link to something the kiddos have been eyeing.
It’s funny, I recall sitting with a friend years ago making our Christmas wish lists. Mine was filled with ideas for others, while his was a detailed inventory of things he wanted, complete with brands and specs. I didn’t realize that was a thing back then, but it seems pretty common now! My own kids do make their holiday lists, but they know not to expect all of it.
Emma really nails it when she says, “Not every desire in life will be fulfilled, and maintaining a thankful heart is an incredibly valuable skill.” Honestly, that’s such a great mindset to have.
To sum it up, while a gift registry might seem convenient for some, it can change the way kids view giving and receiving. It’s all about balancing expectations and teaching gratitude along the way.
