Hey there, my summer-loving friend!

You’re the one counting down the days until school’s out, practically dancing for joy. Honestly, we can’t be besties anymore. I mean, I’m all for meeting up for a drink, but I have to hit that ‘unfriend’ button on our friendship list. The way you’re thrilled about beach days with the kids, spontaneous family trips, and the bliss of no schedules? It’s enough to make me reach for the wine after only two hours of summer break!

Just today at 4:32 PM, I get bombarded with questions:

  • “Mom, how long is a garden stick? Is it the same as this tape measure?”
  • “Mom, look! I’m clipping this tape measure to my belt loop. Isn’t it cool? You don’t even see me!”
  • And the classic, “Don’t tell Dad when he gets home – I wanna surprise him!”

Meanwhile, my eight-year-old is glued to the TV watching “Dog with a Blog,” but still manages to sneak glances at what I’m doing.

At 4:35 PM, the questions roll in:

  • “Mom, why are you writing about me?”
  • “Mom, why’s there a question mark there?”
  • “Can you put more cereal in a bag for me?”
  • “Mom, I’m doing my homework after cereal. Oh, can I also have a drink?”

Before I can even respond with something like, “Do your legs work?” or “Where’s the fridge?” he’s pleading, “Can you get me a drink, pleEEze?”

Did I mention he’s almost eight? I really thought sending him to speech therapy at two and a half would help…

By 4:39 PM, he’s distracted by his quiet older brother, who is deeply engrossed in his iPad (aka the best babysitter ever). “What’s the score? What app are you playing? Can Dad download that for me?”

Then the older sibling chimes in because the younger one’s measuring everything in sight, including him. “Stop! You’re so annoying!”

  • “Stop measuring my foot and my head!”
  • “Stop measuring Wilsey!”
  • “Mommmmmy!”

So, to all of you eagerly anticipating those long summer days: Enjoy! I may not get you, but I’ll be sending my eight-year-old your way, so you can reach for the wine glass with me. As for me, I’ll be doing a happy dance come September.

In summary, summer can be overwhelming, especially with curious kids at home. While some thrive in this season, others just need a break. Here’s to hoping September brings a little more peace and quiet!
