Dear Future College Freshman,

First off, I love you. It’s the most important thing I want to express, so let’s start there. Your journey into college is about to begin, and with that comes a whirlwind of excitement and challenges. While I don’t have all the answers to life’s big questions, I do have some wisdom to share that I hope will help you navigate this new chapter.

I know I might seem old to you, but in my mind, I’m still your age. Seriously, it feels like just yesterday I was in your shoes. Roll your eyes if you want, but I promise you, I remember thinking I had it all figured out—only to realize later I was clueless about most things. You’re young and that’s perfectly okay! It’s a time for learning, and if you can recognize your own naivety, you’re already ahead of the curve.

So, here are ten key things I want you to keep in mind:

  1. Mistakes are inevitable, and that’s a good thing! Learn from them and grow, but don’t be careless. Life is about trying, failing, and trying again.
  2. Be true to yourself. Embrace who you are, and when you feel scared, face those fears head-on. Just remember, if some guy at a party insists you’re his soulmate after one glance, run away!
  3. Stick around! The first few weeks of college are crucial for forming friendships. It may feel long, but it’s a one-time opportunity that shapes your entire experience. Resist the urge to retreat back home, even if you miss it. Engage with your new surroundings, and don’t forget to put your phone down.
  4. Study hard! This is not a joke. College is real, and if you slack off, you’ll regret it later. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Remember, it’s okay to not be great at everything—sometimes, you just have to accept that!
  5. Don’t box yourself in! Keep your options open. You might think you know what career you want, but trust me, there’s so much out there you haven’t even discovered yet. Dabble in different subjects and find what truly speaks to you.
  6. Have a blast! College is a unique time in your life. Enjoy it while you can because once you’re an adult, the freedom to be silly will change.
  7. Be responsible. Make smart choices and trust your instincts. Don’t drink and drive, and be cautious of those who might lead you astray.
  8. Stay away from toxic people, even if they’re cute! You are beautiful and deserving of respect. Don’t let anyone manipulate you into giving them your trust too soon.
  9. Prioritize female friendships! They are going to uplift you and be a source of joy throughout your college years.
  10. Call your mom often! She’s already missing you, and you don’t want her to worry. Just remember, if you feel like coming home after the first week, I’ll be there to remind you to stick it out.

Most importantly, always remember to wear your yoga pants with a long, flowing shirt. You’re going to rock this!

Stay fabulous, and if you ever need more advice, I’m just a call away.

XOXO,
Auntie Laura
