Why a Loyal Dog is Better Than a Crummy Date
You know it’s time to reevaluate your dating life when you find yourself yearning for your dog during a date. If the thought of cuddly fur and slobbery kisses makes you happier than the guy with the unfortunate hairdo, it’s definitely time to call it a night. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate men, but sometimes, my pup just steals the show.
I wasn’t always a dog enthusiast. After my marriage fell apart, I promised my kids they could have a dog to help ease the transition. After a lot of pondering (and avoiding long-term commitment like the plague), we settled on a St. Bernard. Enter Charlie, our big bundle of joy and trouble.
Bringing Charlie home in January 2010 was a whirlwind. The puppy phase was filled with chaos—he chewed up everything from kitchen utensils to furniture and grew at an alarming rate. Within months, I was running after him through parks and intersections, learning that walking him was more like being dragged along for the ride. His antics kept me on my toes, and I quickly became a pro at cleaning up after him.
As time went on, I found myself overwhelmed. Between the challenges of my divorce, my kids’ struggles, and the constant drool decorating my home, I thought about giving him up. But the rescue shelters encouraged me to stick it out and build a bond. Eventually, Charlie learned a few commands (okay, maybe just “sit”), and as the kids returned to school, he and I became inseparable.
Sure, he has his quirks—like drinking from the toilet, snoring like a freight train, and burying snacks in the most unexpected places—but the love he gives is unmatched. He listens to me vent for hours, never interrupts, and somehow remains excited to see me every time I walk in the room. Unlike some human companions, he never makes empty promises about cleaning or yard work. Plus, he doesn’t judge me when my jeans fit a little snug or when dinner is late.
The changes from my divorce were tough. My kids needed reassurance, and the loss of a familiar home was heart-wrenching. Yet, through all the ups and downs, Charlie was my constant. He was there during lonely nights, providing comfort and companionship that no date could ever offer.
It’s no accident that my kids picked a St. Bernard. They’re known for their instincts in harsh conditions, and Charlie walked into my life right when I needed him the most. He has taught me that loneliness is a choice and that a fulfilling life can take many forms. While others may chase after their version of happiness, I’ve found mine right here with my furry friend.
