9 Reasons I’m Teaching My Sons to Sew
Hey there! So, I’ve been thinking about the skills I want to pass on to my boys, and sewing has definitely made the list. Here are some reasons why I’m diving into this with them.
- Boosting Executive Function: Sewing is a fantastic way to help kids develop their executive function skills. These days, kids don’t get as many chances to engage in long-term projects that require planning, memory, and flexibility. Sewing a garment or a quilt takes time and patience, which is something I want my boys to experience. I believe in projects that span weeks, not just minutes!
- Pattern Following is Key: Being able to follow a pattern is an essential life skill. Many people struggle with reading diagrams or instructions. By learning to sew and follow patterns, my kids will be better equipped to tackle maps, recipes, and even technical drawings down the line.
- Connecting with Their Interests: My youngest is all about superheroes right now! He’s fascinated by the costumes and gear they wear. After seeing the cape I made for him, he’s asked tons of questions about how to create one himself. It’s a great way to get him involved while tapping into what he loves.
- Basic Clothing Skills Are Essential: Just like everyone should know how to cook and clean, it’s important for my sons to understand basic sewing skills, like fixing a button or hemming pants. The idea that boys can skip out on these chores because it’s “women’s work” is so outdated.
- Sewing Teaches Engineering and Design: My son loves building and designing things, and I want him to explore all areas of creation—not just those deemed “masculine.” Learning to create something functional and beautiful from fabric is just as important as constructing something from wood.
- Sewing Machines Are Cool: Have you seen how sewing machines have evolved? They’re a brilliant piece of machinery! Understanding how they work, from vintage foot-pedal models to modern computerized versions, gives kids a solid foundation in technology.
- Crafting and STEM Go Hand-in-Hand: Sewing isn’t just about fabric; it can also lead into STEM subjects. There are tons of high-tech materials available, like conductive thread and programmable LEDs. Websites like Adafruit and Sparkfun make it easy for anyone to get started with these cool supplies.
- Breaking Gender Norms: I want my boys to know that interests shouldn’t be limited by outdated gender roles. The happiest and most successful people have diverse interests. I once showed a friend, Jamie, how a bias cut affects fabric drape, and he found it fascinating. I want my kids to embrace all knowledge without constraints.
- Sewing as a Gateway to History: Sewing is rich with history and lessons about international trade. It’s interesting to consider how sewing machines helped women gain independence and how the industry has evolved over time. By exploring sewing, we can learn so much about our world today.
While sewing might not seem as crucial as it once was, it offers practical skills and creative outlets that I want my sons to cherish. I’m excited to pass down these lessons that have been shared in my family for generations—starting with a superhero cape!
