What You Definitely Know If You Grew Up in Wisconsin
Hey there! If you were raised in Wisconsin like I was, you probably have some pretty strong opinions (and a few quirks) that set you apart. I grew up in the Badger State, and let me tell you, it’s a unique place that teaches you some essential life lessons.
Stop Your Complainin’
Wisconsinites are known for being kind, but they also have a tough-as-nails attitude when things get rough. Imagine a blizzard dropping 31 inches of snow on Halloween—does that stop anyone? Nope! Kids may take a bit longer to trick-or-treat, but trudging through the snow is just part of the adventure. Plus, what else is that Toro 18 inch Electric Power Curve Snow Thrower in your garage for if not to clear a path while dressed as your favorite superhero? Seriously, quit your complainin’.
It’s Not “Soda,” It’s “Pop”
No one from Wisconsin calls it anything else.
Seasons for Everything
The year is divided into Packers, Brewers, Packers, and then there’s House Lights. December is a whole different ballgame where we turn our homes into dazzling displays of holiday cheer—think insane amounts of lights and maybe a plastic deer or two munching on invisible berries.
Legendary Work Ethic
Fresh grads from the University of Wisconsin (go Badgers!) land jobs in big cities like New York and San Francisco because they’re polite, hardworking, and totally down to earth. They just want to earn their keep and climb the ladder. You won’t catch a Wisconsin kid bragging about striking it rich before they hit 30; we just roll up our sleeves and get to work.
Cheese is Life
A nice slice of extra sharp cheddar can fix just about anything. And on tough days? Swiss is our go-to.
Water Skiing “Up Nort’”
If you can’t water ski “up nort’,” what are you even doing? Wisconsin boasts over 15,000 lakes, and spending time at one means camping, s’mores, and, yes, mastering those water skis.
Respecting Your Elders
Respecting your elders is a big deal here. You won’t find many teens talking back to their parents. There’s definitely something in the air—maybe it’s those mega-churches promoting respect for your folks.
Cow-Tipping
Cow-tipping? Yeah, it happens. Not everyone lives on a farm, but there’s probably one nearby. Just don’t try it at home—trust me, it’s not worth the trouble.
Friday Night Fish Fry
And speaking of Friday nights, what’s better than a fish fry? Whether you’re in Milwaukee, Fond du Lac, or Green Bay, you know what’s cooking: crispy cod and crunchy potato wedges! If you’re in Sun Prairie, Buck & Honey’s is a must-visit.
Brats vs. Spoiled Kids
Let’s not confuse brats and spoiled kids. Brats—pronounced “brahts”—are a type of sausage, and you better treat them right (especially when sauerkraut’s involved).
Beer: Our Other Religion
Beer is practically our other religion. If you’re over 18, you might see us turning a blind eye to a cold one or two. Just know that drinking and driving is a no-go. But if you’re at a friend’s barbecue with a brewski, well, that’s acceptable. We love our local brews like Leinenkugel’s and Capital Brewery. If you happen to be lounging on the University of Wisconsin’s terrace overlooking Lake Mendota with a cold drink in hand, savor it. Summers here are what keep many of us tied to this beautiful state.
A Glimpse of Wisconsin Life
This is just a glimpse of what it means to grow up in Wisconsin, and honestly, it’s a place that sticks with you for life.
